NGC 4948 = IC 4156 is a 14.6 likes bright barred spiral galaxy with pronounced emission lines from the Hubble type SBd in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic , the estimated 46 million light-years from the Milky Way 's center. In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4925 , NGC 4928 , NGC 4942 , NGC 4958 .

The Type Ia supernova SN 1994U was observed here.

The object was discovered twice; first on May 25, 1887 by Lewis A. Swift (discovery listed as NGC 4948 ); then in July 1899 by DeLisle Stewart (listed as IC 4156 ).
