NGC 4942 = IC 4136 is a 13.0 mag bright bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBcd in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 73 million light years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light years across . In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4925 , NGC 4928 , NGC 4948 , NGC 4958 .
The object was discovered twice; first discovered on March 23, 1789 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “vF, S” (observation listed as NGC 4942 ); then in July 1899 by DeLisle Stewart (listed as IC 4136 ).
