NGC 4946 is a 12.5 mag bright elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type "E3" in the constellation Centaur in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 130 million light years from the Milky Way and about 65,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered on June 3, 1834 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, who noted "B, R, gpmbM, 1 ′, the preceding of two". The second named object of this observation is NGC 4950 .
