NGC 4933 = IC 4176 is a 12.1 mag bright lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble-type S0 / a in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 128 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter .

NGC 4933 forms together with IC 4173 a double galaxy connected by gravity (Arp 176) with visible effects on both galaxies; both objects are also called (interchangeably) NGC 4933A and NGC 4933B . A gravitational connection with a third galaxy, PGC 45143 (sometimes also called NGC 4933C ), has not yet been properly proven.

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class galaxies with narrow opposing arms .

In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 4920 .

The object was discovered twice; first on May 9, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope , who described it as "pF, pS, R, r, near some small stars" (discovery listed as NGC 4933 ); then on April 16, 1895 by Guillaume Bigourdan (listed as IC 4176 ).
