NGC 4953 is a 13.2 likes bright lenticular galaxy of Hubble type S0-a in the constellation Centaurus , which is about 214 million light-years from the Milky Way's center. Together with the non-NGC object PGC 45343, it forms a double galaxy connected by gravity and was discovered on June 26, 1834 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, who marked it with “vF, pS, among stars; wind furious ”. On a second observation he noted, “Viewed; a diagram made representing it as round, with three small stars, one distant about 1 semi-diameter from border; pos about 293 degrees; another distant 2/3 diameter; pos = 75 degrees; the third distant 1.5 diameter, pos = 300 degrees ".
