NGC 4976 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E4 in the constellation Centaurus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 57 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxy NGC 4945 is located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on March 31, 1835 .
