NGC 4986 is a 13.2 mag bright bar spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 217 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 110,000 ly. Together with NGC 4956 , IC 4189 , PGC 45937 and PGC 45410 , it forms the small galaxy group LGG 329.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 4956 , IC 4189 , IC 4201 , IC 4213 .
The object was discovered on May 1st, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, which she labeled “vF, stellar; with 300 power the same ”.
