NGC 5001 is a 13.8 likes bright barred spiral galaxy with an active galactic nucleus from Hubble type SB in the constellation Ursa Major at the northern sky . It is an estimated 410 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 135,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 4967 , NGC 4974 , IC 847 , IC 853 .
The object was discovered on May 1, 1831 by John Herschel .
