NGC 5012 is a 12.3 likes bright barred spiral galaxy with an active galactic nucleus from Hubble type SBc in the constellation Coma Berenices the northern sky . It is an estimated 117 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 180,000 light years in diameter. Together with the non-NGC object PGC 45884 (also NGC 5012 A ) it probably forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair. Together with NGC 5016 and PGC 45884 , it forms the small galaxy group LGG 336.
The type IIn supernova SN 1997eg was observed here.
The object was discovered on April 10, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “cB pL”.
