NGC 5008 = IC 4381 is a 13.4 likes bright barred spiral galaxy with an active galactic nucleus from Hubble type SBc in the constellation Bootes and about 415 million light-years from the Milky Way center. It belongs to the Hickson Compact Group 71 and has been discovered twice; first on May 18, 1862 by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest (listed as NGC 5008 ); then again on June 15, 1895 by Stéphane Javelle (listed as IC 4381 ) due to an incorrect listing by d'Arrest .
