NGC 4987 is a 13.4 mag bright elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type "E4" in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 215 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 ly in diameter.
The object was discovered on April 26, 1789 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "F, vS, stellar".
