NGC 4978 is a 13.2 mag bright lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble-type S0 / a in the constellation Haar der Berenike in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 289 million light years from the Milky Way and about 130,000 light years in diameter . The galaxy is considered a member of the Coma cluster of galaxies .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on March 23, 1827 .
