NGC 4980 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Hydra south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 57 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 25,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy NGC 4965 .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on March 30, 1835 .
