IC 4397 is an active spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Bear Guardian in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 492 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 145,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 5553 , IC 4395 , IC 4399 , IC 4405 .
The object was discovered by Guillaume Bigourdan on June 23, 1889 .
