NGC 5553 is a 14.0 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type "Sa" in the constellation Bear Guardian in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 205 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 80,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies IC 4395 , IC 4397 , IC 4399 , IC 4405 .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on May 6, 1831 .
