NGC 5542 is a 14.3 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Bear Keeper in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 348 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light-years across.
The galaxies NGC 5538 , NGC 5543 , NGC 5546 , NGC 5549 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on March 6, 1851 by Bindon Blood Stoney , an assistant to William Parsons .
