NGC 5023 is a 12.1 likes bright spiral galaxy with pronounced emission lines from the Hubble type Sc in the constellation Canes Venatici on the northern sky . It is estimated to be 21 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 30,000 light years in diameter. Together with nine other galaxies, it forms the NGC 5194 group ( LGG 347 ).
The object was discovered on April 9, 1787 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “pB, mE sp-nf, nearly in the meridian, 5 ′ long, 0.75 ′ broad”.
