NGC 5039 is a 15.4 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 235 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 50,000 ly. In the same area of the sky there are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5015 and NGC 5036 .
The property was discovered by Francis Preserved Leavenworth on January 25, 1887 .
