NGC 5044 is a 10.8 mag bright elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type "E0" in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 119 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 110,000 light-years across.
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5046 , NGC 5047 , NGC 5049 , NGC 5035 .

The object was discovered on December 31, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "pB, pL, R, bM".
