NGC 5068 , is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 24 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 45,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 5084 and NGC 5087 , among others .
The object was discovered on March 10, 1785 by the astronomer William Herschel with the help of his 18.7 inch reflector telescope and was later listed in the New General Catalog .
