NGC 5078 is a spiral galaxy with an active galaxy core ( LINER type) of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Water Snake south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 91 million light years from the Milky Way , about 105,000 light years in diameter, and a bulge 50,000 light years thick.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5061 , NGC 5101 , IC 874 , IC 879 .
The object was discovered on March 28, 1786 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who noted "F, pS, E". John Herschel described them in an observation in 1835 as “pB, S, pmE, psbM; has a star 7-8th likes following “.
