NGC 5101 is a 10.5 mag bright lenticular galaxy of the Hubble-type SB0 / a in the constellation Water Snake south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 77 million light years from the Milky Way and about 135,000 light years in diameter.

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5078 , IC 874 , IC 879 , IC 4243 .

The Type I supernova SN 1986B was observed here.

The object was discovered on March 28, 1786 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "pB, pL, iF, gbM". John Herschel noted two observations with an 18-inch reflector telescope in 1847: "vB, pmE, gmbM" and "B, R, pL, psmbM to a star".
