NGC 5096 is a 14.0 mag bright lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky and forms together with the galaxies PGC 3442492 and PGC 4530507 a small group that is both optically and gravitationally bound.
As the brightest part of this group, it was discovered on March 20, 1787 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “eF, vS”.
