NGC 5070 = NGC 5072 is a 13.5 mag bright galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 300 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 90,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky there are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5076 , NGC 5077 , NGC 5079 , NGC 5088 .

The object was discovered twice; on June 3, 1886 the observation carried out as NGC 5070 was carried out by Lewis A. Swift , who “eeF; it; vF * v close; looks like a D * at first; another no; 6 in field “. Swift also mentions "[N5072, N5076, N5077, N5079, N5088]", but this cannot be proven by more recent observations.
The second, but from the date the first discovery was made as NGC 5072 on April 26, 1867 by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest .
