NGC 5061 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E0 in the constellation Hydra south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 87 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years across. The galaxy is the brightest member of the NGC 5061 group ( LGG 341 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5078 , IC 874 , IC 879 .
The Type Ia supernovae SN 1996X and SN 2005cn were observed here.
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on March 28, 1786 .
