NGC 5042 is an 11.8 mag bright bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation of the Water Snake south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 56 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 ly in diameter.
The object was discovered on March 25, 1836 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "F, L, R, vgvlbM, a star 9th mag 1 ′ north, precedes 10 seconds".
