NGC 5038 is a 13.5 mag bright lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble type S0 with an active galaxy core in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 94 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5031 , NGC 5044 , NGC 5046 , NGC 5049 .
The Type I supernova SN 2008cd was observed here.
The object was discovered on May 28, 1881 by Edward Singleton Holden .
