NGC 5038 is a 13.5 mag bright lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble type S0 with an active galaxy core in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 94 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years in diameter.

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5031 , NGC 5044 , NGC 5046 , NGC 5049 .

The Type I supernova SN 2008cd was observed here.

The object was discovered on May 28, 1881 by Edward Singleton Holden .
