NGC 5045 is an open star cluster (type definition "OCL") in the constellation Centaur and about 1500 parsecs from Earth. It was discovered on June 16, 1835 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, who probably observed it twice on the same day and said “a great cluster, or a surprisingly rich portion of the milky way. It contains 34 stars 11th mag, and perhaps 150 or 200 more of less magnitudes in field ”.
