NGC 5047 is a 12.6 likes bright lenticular galaxy of Hubble type S0 in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is an estimated 79 million light years from the Milky Way and about 65,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5037 , NGC 5044 , NGC 5046 , NGC 5049 .
The object was discovered on May 7, 1787 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who only described it as “vF”.
