NGC 5049 is a 13.0 likes bright lenticular galaxy of Hubble type S0 in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 130 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light-years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5035 , NGC 5044 , NGC 5046 , NGC 5047 .
The object was discovered on December 31, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "F, S".
