NGC 5017 is a 12.6 likes bright elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E3 in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is an estimated 109 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 60,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 5030 , NGC 5031 , NGC 5035 , NGC 5037 .
The object was discovered on May 7, 1787 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, which only noted "vF".
