NGC 5079 is a 12.0 likes bright barred spiral galaxy of Hubble type SBBC / P in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 96 million light years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 5076 and NGC 5077 , it forms the galaxy trio Holm 514 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5070 , NGC 5088 , NGC 5097 , NGC 5099 .

The object was discovered on May 11, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel , together with NGC 5076 and NGC 5077 , with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, which they named "The two most south of three. ... The most southern ... eF, eS. Verified with 240 power ”. On an observation in 1835, John Herschel noted “faint, small, round. The 3rd of a group of 3 ".
