NGC 4939 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type Sbc and lies in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is around 134 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 225,000 light years .

The supernovae SN 1968X , SN 1973J , SN 2008aw (Type-II) and SN 2014B (Type-IIP) were observed here.

The object was discovered by William Herschel on March 25, 1786 .
