IC 4197 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / SB0 with an active galaxy core in the constellation Hydra south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 129 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter . In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 4968 , NGC 4970 , NGC 4993 , IC 4180 , among others .
The object was discovered on February 27, 1898 by the American astronomer Lewis A. Swift .
