history
From the 12th to the 14th centuries, the lands of Leuchie were owned by the Earls of Fife . There was an unspecified structure known as North Berwick House . Under Robert II Leuchie went to the Douglas clan . In the aftermath of the Battle of Arkinholm in 1455, all of James Douglas, 9th Earl of Douglas , was confiscated in favor of the Crown. In 1479 they passed to Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus as heir to James Douglas in the second generation and a free barony was established.
By the 17th century, the lands had passed to the Elphinstone line of Clan Johnstones . In 1699, Hew Dalrymple, Lord North Berwick , who already owned various surrounding lands, acquired Leuchie. He summarizes them to the Barony North Berwick with an area of over 15 km 2 . His grandson and heir, Hew Dalrymple, 2nd Baronet , had the existing structure demolished on Leuchie and in 1779 commissioned the construction of today's Leuchie House. The mansion was completed in 1785 and Dalrymple lived there until his death five years later. His heir, Hew Dalrymple, 3rd Baronet , also inherited and relocated Bargany House in Ayrshire .
In the following years Leuchie House was inherited within the family and was partially empty. Hew Hamilton-Dalrymple, 10th Baronet inherited the property in 1959 and constructed a new building in the gardens of Leuchie House, which he inhabits. He leased Leuchie House to the Servite Order , which has since used it as a nursing home.
