Horatio Torromé

Horatio Tertuliano Torromé (* 1861 in Rio de Janeiro , † September 16, 1920 in Willesden , Greater London ) was a figure skater who competed internationally for Argentina and the United Kingdom .

life and career

Torromé was born to an Argentine father and a Brazilian mother. Soon after his birth, the family emigrated to Great Britain, where the father made some wealth as a successful tea and coffee importer. In 1881 Torromé and his brother entered the father's business.

Torromé started for the United Kingdom at the 1902 World Figure Skating Championships in London . Still in third place after the compulsory program , he slipped to fourth and last place after the freestyle . The Swede Ulrich Salchow became world champion .

In 1905 he became British figure skating champion and the following year he was able to defend his title. In 1903 he was runner- up behind Madge Syers .

In 1908, now 46 years old, he managed to qualify for Great Britain for the Olympic Games in London . At short notice, however, he decided to go to the start for his father's home country, Argentina. He was the only South American participant in the London Games and finished seventh. To date (as of 2015) he is the only Argentine who has ever participated in an Olympic figure skating competition.

Torromé also acted as a judge for the pair skating in London and exercised this role again at the World Figure Skating Championships in Manchester in 1912 .
