Basil John Williams ( March 11, 1891 in Buenos Aires - 1951 in Surrey , England ) was a British figure skater who started in single and pair skating .

He was a stockbroker in London and wealthy enough to spend his winters in France and Switzerland.

Williams had his only appearance at a world championship in 1912 in Manchester at the side of Enid Harrison . They placed sixth there. The following year Williams became British champions. He defeated Phyllis Johnson , among others , who, since there was no independent women's competition at that time, was part of the men's competition. Johnson, who had become world champion in pair skating with her husband James H. Johnson in 1909 and 1912 , had to find a new skating partner after the First World War because her husband was struggling with health problems. Basil Williams became her new partner and together he and Johnson took part in the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp and won the bronze medal behind Ludowika Jakobsson and Walter Jakobsson , who represented Finland, and the Norwegians Alexia Bryn and Yngvar Bryn . Williams also started in the individual run at the Olympic Games and finished the competition in seventh place.

Williams later married the daughter of Wilbur Whitehead , the director of the Simplex Automobile Corporation and one of America's finest bridge players .
