Joris Roelofs
Joris Roelofs (born February 21, 1984 in Aix-en-Provence ) is a Dutch jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet , bass clarinet , flute ).
Live and act
Roelofs, who grew up in Amsterdam, started playing the clarinet with eleven alto saxophones when he was eight . He studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam , where he obtained his master's degree in 2007. From 2005 to 2010 he was a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra ( Third Dream ); he also played first alto saxophone in the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw . In 2008 he recorded the debut album Introducing Joris Roelofs (Material Records) with Aaron Goldberg , Ari Hoenig and Matt Penman . The quartet album Live at the Bimhuis followed in 2010 . He performed several times with his band at the North Sea Jazz Festival . In 2012 he played in a trio with Pablo Held and Ted Poor . In 2015 Pirouet Records released the album Amateur Dentist , which he recorded in a trio with Matt Penman and Ted Poor. He can also be heard on recordings with Laura Fygi and the Metropole Orkest . He also appeared with Brad Mehldau , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Sonny Fortune , Ari Hoenig, Matthias Schriefl , Marike van Dijk and the WDR Big Band Cologne .
Prizes and awards
Joris Roelofs won the Pim Jacobs Prize in 2001. In 2003 he was the first non-American to receive the Stan Getz / Clifford Brown Fellowship Award from the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) in the United States . The IAJE also honored him with a first level prize. In 2004 he won the Deloitte Jazz Award ; In 2008 he was selected for the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition .
