Johannes Ludwig (* 1988 ) is a German jazz musician ( alto saxophone , composition , also clarinet, flute).

Live and act

Ludwig was a member of the Baden-Württemberg State Youth Jazz Orchestra from 2004 to 2007 and of the Federal Jazz Orchestra from 2008 to 2010 , with whom he toured in South Africa in 2009 and India in 2011. From 2007 to 2011 he studied jazz saxophone in Nuremberg with Hubert Winter , Steffen Schorn and Klaus Graf , from 2011 to 2014 jazz composition and arrangement at the Cologne University of Music and Dance with u. a. Sebastian Sternal and Joachim Ullrich .

For his own band projects such as the quintet Jean Quadrat and the Ludwig quartet / quintet , with which he played concerts all over Germany, Ludwig writes catchy and at the same time demanding material: “Sound compositions, in the underground of which there is contemporary, complex bubbling, form an extremely colorful one in themselves Closed program that often has a catchy tune. ”In the opinion of critic Henning Sieverts , it is“ music that breathes pleasantly with plenty of time for development ”.

His composition "Tag am Kap" can be heard on the CD BuJazzO Vol.9: Originals . In 2011 he toured with the saxophone quartet ZeitGeistMaschine by Johannes Enders , with whom he also recorded. He also formed duos with the pianists Jürgen Friedrich and Andreas Feith. With Joris Roelofs , Johannes Felscher and Peter Kronreif he has formed the Quartet Immigration Booth . He is also a member of the Sunday Night Orchestra Different Faces , the band Jilman Zilman and one of the directors of the Subway Jazz Orchestra , for which he also composes. He can also be heard on recordings with Thilo Wolf's big bands and with Caroline Thon . He has been the artistic director of the UpBeat Hohenlohe jazz festival since 2014 .

Prizes and awards

Ludwig was already eleven years old in 1999 and 2005 at Jugend jazzt Baden-Württemberg and was a finalist at the Yamaha SaxContest 2007. In 2012 he won 1st place at the jazz prize of the Nuremberg University of Music. With his Johannes Ludwig Quartet he took second place at the New German Jazz Prize 2016.
