Thilo Wolf (born September 8, 1967 in Fürth ) is a German jazz musician. The pianist , composer and arranger leads his own formations with the “Thilo Wolf Big Band”, “Thilo Wolf Jazz Quartet” and “Groove Selection”. He also regularly composes and arranges music for concert programs, musical theater and TV productions.

Thilo Wolf has given concerts with his formations in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and England, in concert halls such as the Philharmonie in Munich or Dortmund, but also at numerous jazz festivals. His crossover projects led him to joint concerts with well-known symphony orchestras but also to various classical music festivals.

Live and act

In addition to piano, Wolf learned other instruments such as double bass and drums and received numerous awards as a teenager. He received his musical training exclusively from well-known private teachers such as B. Charly Antolini (drums). At the age of 16 Thilo Wolf wrote his first arrangement for big band . After finishing school at the Heinrich-Schliemann-Gymnasium Fürth , he studied business administration at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and graduated with a diploma.

The Thilo Wolf Big Band

At the age of 25, his dream of leading his own big band came true. Thilo Wolf got his own TV show from Bayerischer Rundfunk called “SWING IT!”. The show, in which the most famous jazz musicians were guests, had its fixed broadcast slot for 12 years. The big band was also used as the ARD television orchestra in numerous music programs such as the " Micheal Schanze Show", "Songs are my life" or "If that's no reason to celebrate". The " Bavarian Film Prize " and the " Bavarian Television Prize " have also been engaging the band on a regular basis for many years. The Thilo Wolf Big Band is also a welcome guest in numerous ballrooms in Germany.

In 2012 Thilo Wolf celebrated its 20th anniversary with his big band. Guests such as Caroline Kieswetter, the Skibbe rock band and drummer legend Charly Antolini were invited to this anniversary concert. Bavarian television dedicated a half-hour portrait to Thilo Wolf for the anniversary and broadcast the live recording of the anniversary concert. The big band's 25th birthday was also celebrated with a large concert show and broadcast on TV.

Crossover projects

Wolf's love is pulsating, swinging jazz, but he is also open to cross-style projects. The Rock the Big Band project premiered at the end of 2013. It emerged from the cooperation of the Thilo Wolf Big Band and the Skibbe rock trio. The release concert of the album of the same name was broadcast several times.

Numerous concert projects and programs have already been created with his jazz quartet, most of which Thilo Wolf arranges himself. This resulted in joint concerts a. a. with the (classical) Berlin Saxophone Ensemble or the festival tour Klassik & Jazz with the Windsbacher Knabenchor . For the Jazz Meets Symphony project , the Thilo Wolf Jazz Quartet met the classical orchestra for the first time in 2015 with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra. Since then, u. a. Projects such as Music for Lovers, Soul & Symphony or Gershwin Melodies (with the Münchner Rundfunkorchester) , which combine the jazz ensemble with a classical orchestra.

Music productions

In addition to his own projects, Thilo Wolf writes and produces numerous CD and music recordings for film (e.g. "Regina on the stairs" with Katja Riemann ), for television and radio ( ARD shows such as "Songs are my life" or "Herzlichen Glückwunsch "with Michael Schanze ) as well as for artists like Bill Ramsey , Patrick Lindner , Al Martino or Angelika Milster , for orchestras like the RIAS Big Band Berlin , hr-Bigband , the" New York Strings ", the Babelsberger Filmorchester or the Münchner Rundfunkorchester .

Since 2007, Wolf has been the musical director of productions at the Stadttheater Fürth (“Petticoat & Schickedance”, an economic miracle revue by Ewald Arenz , and “The Last Five Years”). As a composer, he has written three musicals so far: "Bahn frei" (book and lyrics: Ewald Arenz, premier in the Fürther Stadttheater, 2010), "Tod im Turm" ( Theater Lüneburg , 2012) and "Der Tunnel" (book and lyrics: Ewald Arenz, premiere in the Fürther Stadttheater, 2015). As a producer and conductor, Thilo Wolf and his Big Band and the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra recorded a highly acclaimed version of the music for La Cage aux Folles for the Ohnsorg Theater Hamburg and the Comödie Fürth . In September 2019 the premiere of " The Merry Widow " took place, which was brought to the stage of the Comedy Fürth as a jazz operetta with Volker Heissmann and Martin Rassau .

His CD productions and concerts have led to collaborations with multiple Grammy award winners such as Diane Schuur and the New York Voices as well as with John Pizzarelli , Randy Brecker , James Morrison and many others. He produced CDs in New York, Munich and Berlin and published more than 20 of them with a total circulation of more than a quarter of a million copies.

Other entrepreneurial activities

Since 1993, Thilo Wolf has also been managing director of Eduard Wolf GmbH & Co.KG known as Wolf-Promotion, a medium-sized company in the advertising industry. In 1997 he founded MDL JAZZ Musikproduktion, which has been operating as Wavehouse Entertainment GmbH since 2018 . The competence center The Creative Wolf emerged from the synergies of these two companies.

Prizes and awards

In his hometown, Wolf was awarded the Fürth Culture Prize (1986) and the Fürth Theater Association Prize (1982). He also received first prize at the “Forum of Young German Composers for Orchestral Music” (1984). He was also a laureate (1983) and scholarship (1988–1992) of the “ Nürnberger Nachrichten ”. Further prizes are the “Louis Armstrong Memorial Prize” (2004) and the City of Fürth Culture Prize (2004). In June 2012 he was voted artist of the month for June by the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region . In 2007 the work of the Thilo Wolf Big Band was honored by being inducted into the American Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame . Thilo Wolf's music for the musical “Der Tunnel” was nominated twice in 2016 in the categories “Best Composition” and “Best Arrangement” for the German Musical Theater Prize and won this award for “Best Stage Design” and “Best Performance in a Supporting Role ". Furthermore, the work of his company Wolf-Promotion was honored by the association POPAI (Point of Purchase Advertising International) with the AWARD 2013 in gold and the AWARD 2016 in bronze for the best display in the field of "Temporary Health".
