Joan Faulkner (* 1960 in Gary , Indiana , USA ) is an American jazz singer . She was unofficially a supporting voice for the former pop groups Boney M. and Milli Vanilli . Her repertoire includes jazz, blues , soul , pop and techno .

Live and act

Faulkner grew up as the daughter of a preacher and was already three years old to be heard playing gospel in the church choir of her father's congregation . At the age of eleven she sang at funerals and weddings; at the age of fourteen she took over the leadership of the church choir in her father's congregation. At seventeen she made her first recording and became assistant director of the Indiana State Choir . When her husband at the time was stationed in the US state of South Dakota , she sang in church during the day and in clubs at night.

In 1978 Faulkner came to Frankfurt am Main with her husband and three children , where she initially worked as a secretary in the US Army. Both in the Main metropolis and in the Rhine-Main area , however, musical performances gradually returned, initially in jazz and blues bars and in clubs of the US Army. In Frankfurt's nationally known Tigerpalast she was part of the regular cast for many years. She also knew how to inspire a large audience in Frankfurt's Alter Oper , Berlin's Friedrichstadtpalast or Dortmund's Westfalenhalle . However, their marriage did not survive this.

She sang in large gala concerts with artists such as Roberto Blanco , Howard Carpendale , Harald Juhnke , Al Martino , Bill Ramsey , Jennifer Rush , Caterina Valente and the Weather Girls and earned the honorary title “The Voice”. She took on the part of the opener for concerts by Ray Charles and Percy Sledge . Bandleaders such as Peter Herbolzheimer , Horst Jankowski , Dieter Reith , Hugo Strasser and Thilo Wolf brought them to their performances.

Music producer Frank Farian , who called Faulkner's singing voice “the best black voice in Europe”, hired her as the leading ghost singer for his pop groups Boney M. and Milli Vanilli . This was noticed by insiders and the public at the latest with Milli Vanilli's million dollar hit “ Blame It on the Rain ”.

Faulkner's partner is the Hungarian jazz pianist Gusztáv Csík , with whom she also performs together. In 2006 she performed with her band Three Ladies of Blues at the Burghausen Jazz Week . In the field of jazz , Tom Lord recorded four recording sessions between 1983 and 2006, with the Wolverines Jazz Band , the big band RTV Ljubljana and with the big band of Thilo Wolf. In 2019 followed, together with the Barrelhouse Jazzband, the album 66 Years ... now all the more!
