Fleurine

Fleurine is a Dutch jazz singer.

Fleurine studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory for four years . She then moved to New York in 1993 and has since moved regularly between Europe and the USA. In addition to English, she also sings in Portuguese and French. On her debut album "Meant to be!" (Bluemusic 1996), on which she is accompanied by trumpeter Tom Harrell , guitarist Jesse van Ruller , saxophonist Ralph Moore , pianist Renee Rosnes , Christian McBride on bass and Billy Drummond on drums, In addition to standard compositions, she interpreted compositions by jazz musicians such as Joshua Redman , Tom Harrell, Thelonious Monk and Kenny Dorham with her own texts. The album gave her a breakthrough and she has since performed at many international festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival (first in 1994), Umbria Jazz , the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Istanbul one . From 1997 she also produced, first the debut album by Jesse van Ruller "European Quintet". In 1996 she performed with Roy Hargrove's quartet at the Havana Jazz Festival in Cuba and toured with the "TSMonk Band" in Canada. In 1997 she heard Brad Mehldau at the North Sea Jazz Festival and invited him to perform together at the Village Vanguard . This resulted in a long-term collaboration. In 2000 their joint album "Close enough for love" was released by EmArcy / Universal (recorded in 1999, new by EmArcy / Universal 2000), in which Mehldau contributed compositions (and string arrangements), but also compositions by Pat Metheny and Antônio Carlos Jobim and one by Fleurine himself and also jazzed up Jimi Hendrix and Supertramp classics. This was followed by a tour with Mehldau in Europe and South America. On their album “Fire” from 2002, pop songs (by the “Pretenders”, Peter Frampton , Bruce Springsteen , Paul Simon and others), but also classical music by Gabriel Fauré and Brazilian music by Jobim, were interpreted. In addition to Brad Mehldau, guitarist Peter Bernstein , saxophonist Seamus Blake , drummer Jeff Ballard and accordionist Gil Goldstein play .

Fleurine also played u. a. with the Metropole Orkest , Pim Jacobs , Ack van Rooyen , John Engels , Rita Reys , Tineke Postma and Al Foster .
