Avishai Cohen (* 1978 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli jazz trumpeter , band leader and composer .

Live and act

Avishai Cohen is the brother of Yuval Cohen (soprano saxophone) and Anat Cohen (clarinet, tenor saxophone), with whom he also plays in the 3 Cohens family band , in which he is the youngest. From the age of eight Cohen received trumpet lessons, learned a.o. a. at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in Ramot HaSharon and played in the local big band. He also played classical trumpet in the Young Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra under conductors such as Zubin Mehta , Kurt Masur and Kent Nagano . He studied at Berklee College of Music and came third in 1997 in the Thelonious Monk Competition , which was held for trumpet that year. He then settled in New York, where he drew attention to himself in the scene of the Smalls jazz club .

According to his own statement, he is strongly influenced by Miles Davis , but also by other modern jazz influences (he himself names Art Farmer , Don Cherry , Kenny Dorham , Chet Baker , Thad Jones , Clifford Brown and, from the older jazz tradition, Louis Armstrong ). His debut album was released in 2002 ( The Trumpet Player , Fresh Sounds New Talent ), which was followed by others on Anzic Records: After The Big Rain (2007, Anzic, with Lionel Loueke ), Flood (2008), Seven (2008), all with own compositions, and two albums with his trio Triveni with bassist Omer Avital and drummer Nasheet Waits ( Introducing Triveni , Anzic 2010, Triveni II , 2012), with whom he performed at the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival . He also toured with the SFJazz Collective and the Lemon Juice Quartet. He played with the Mingus Big Band , Mingus Dynasty and Third World Love , in which he is co-director with Avital and devotes himself to rhythms from Africa, the Middle East and Spain.

With the family band 3 Cohens , the albums One (2004), Braid (2007), Family (2011) and Tightrope (Anzic Records 2013) were released. In 2014 they won Down Beat's Critic Poll in the Rising Star Jazz Group category . In 2012 he won the Down Beat Critics Poll in the Rising Star category for trumpet.

The album Dark Nights by the band Avishai Cohen's Triveni was released on Anzic Records in 2014 .

He should not be confused with the bassist of the same name, Avishai Cohen .
