Yuval Cohen

Yuval Cohen (* 1973 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli jazz - soprano saxophonist , bandleader and composer.

Yuval Cohen is the brother of Avishai Cohen (trumpet) and Anat Cohen (clarinet, tenor saxophone), with whom he also plays in the family band 3 Cohens . He studied at the Conservatory in Tel Aviv and played during his military service from 1991 to 1994 in the big band of the Israeli army (alto saxophone, arranger, co-leader). He then studied at Berklee College of Music (graduating in 1996 summa cum laude ) and at the Manhattan School of Music . His teachers included Joe Viola , George Garzone , Bill Pierce , John LaPorta, and Charlie Banacos .

His debut album Freedom was released in 2007 (with Avishai and Anat Cohen), followed by Song without words in 2010 (Anzic Records), a duo with pianist Shai Maestro, and Hakol Zehavi in 2014 (music by David Zehavi arranged for a jazz septet). With the family band 3 Cohens, the albums One (2004), Braid (2007), Family (2011) and Tightrope (Anzic Records 2013) were released. In 2014 they won Down Beat's Critic Poll in the Rising Star Jazz Group category. He plays with his own quartet and in a duo with the pianist Masako Hamamura.

In 2010 he received his master's degree in composition from the Rubin Academy for Music and Dance in Jerusalem, where he also teaches. He also teaches at the Tel Aviv Conservatory and the Thelma Yellin High School of Arts, whose big band he directed. In 2010 he received the Landau Prize in the jazz category. He's a lawyer.

There is also a pianist, Yuval Cohen, to whom he is not related.
