Charlie Banacos

Charlie Banacos (born August 11, 1946 in Lowell (Massachusetts) , † December 8, 2009 ) was an American jazz pianist who has emerged primarily as a music teacher and author of correspondence courses.

Live and act

Banacos grew up in Dracut and initially played as a musician with Jerry Bergonzi and Harvie Swartz . He received his musical training from Jaki Byard , Lennie Tristano and Margaret Chaloff. He graduated from Lowell State Teachers University in 1968. He later appeared with Roy Haynes , Teddy Kotick and Charlie Mariano , and with Miles Donahue . His composition Pelaghia was performed at Carnegie Hall . Since the late 1960s, he has developed more than 100 study courses for improvisers and composers . He wrote courses such as “Hexatonics”, “Intervallics”, “Superimpositions”, “Overlaps” or “Double Mambos”, which have entered the American canon of jazz pedagogy. Banacos placed particular emphasis on ear training .

Banacos was initially employed at Berklee College of Music . He taught at the New England Conservatory of Music between 1988 and 2009 , but was also a faculty member at the Longy School of Music . Musicians like Mike and Leni Stern , Bill Frisell , Michael Brecker , Joey Calderazzo , Danilo Pérez , Jeff Berlin , Alain Caron , Kenny Werner , George Garzone , Bill Pierce , Marilyn Crispell , Rachel Z and Pat Metheny are among his students. The methods he developed found their way into textbooks and the training of other educational institutions such as the Manhattan School of Music , the Thelonious Monk Institute and the New School .
