Darren Barrett (born June 19, 1967 in Manchester ) is a Canadian jazz trumpeter (also piano , drums ).

Live and act

Barrett, who has Jamaican parents, grew up in Toronto; his father, a car mechanic by profession, was a hobby musician. He received his bachelor's degree from Berklee College of Music in 1990 , a master's degree in jazz performance in 1993 and a master's degree in music education from Queens College in New York in 1995. He then continued his studies at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, which he graduated in 1997. In the same year he won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition for trumpet.

Barrett's first recordings were made in 1992 with Antonio Hart ( Don't You Know I Care ); In 1999 he presented his debut album First One Up , which featured Kenny Garrett , Aaron Goldberg and Jimmy Greene . In the field of jazz he was involved in 21 recording sessions between 1991 and 2011. a. with the Roy Hargrove Big Band, Barbara Dennerlein , Elvin Jones , as drummer with George Colligan . In addition to his own formations Energy in Motion and dB Quintet , he worked with Jackie McLean , Herbie Hancock , Common , Will.i.am , Esperanza Spalding ( Radio Music Society , 2012) and Myron Walden .
