Marshall Allan Gilkes (born September 30, 1978 in Camp Springs , Maryland ) is an American jazz trombonist and composer .

Live and act

Gilkes was born in Maryland into a family of musicians; his mother was a classical singer and pianist, his father the conductor of the Air Force Academy Band . Because of his father's profession, Gilkes grew up in a variety of locations including Washington, DC, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Alabama, Illinois, and Colorado. Gilkes received his first musical training at the Interlochen Arts Academy , University of Northern Colorado , and William Patterson University . He received a bachelor's degree in music from the Juilliard School . Among his teachers were Joseph Alessi , Conrad Herwig , Bud Baker, Ed Neumeister and Wycliffe Gordon . In 2003 Marshall Gilkes was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition .

Gilkes currently plays in Maria Schneider's orchestra and with David Berger's Sultans of Swing . Since March 2010 he has been a permanent member of the WDR Big Band Cologne on the 2nd trombone; In 2014 he left the band at his own request. He is also a member of the Edmar Castañeda Trio. His musical experience spans a wide range of musical styles; he played with the Village Vanguard Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra ( Ghost Band ), Stanley Turrentine , Benny Golson , Michael Dease ( Dease Bones ), Matthias Schriefl , Frederik Köster and Richard Bona . In the field of Latin American music he played with Machito , Giovanni Hidalgo , Chico O'Farrill , Tito Nieves , the Big 3 Palladium Orchestra, Raulin Rosendo, Ray Sepulveda, Eddie Santiago, José Alberto and Iroko La Banda . He was also involved in the 2000/2001 tour of the Broadway show "Swing!" Through North America and Japan. In 2011 he was a soloist on Ryan Truesdell's Centennial - Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans .

Gilkes has presented three albums under his own name, on which he also presents himself as a composer; With the exception of one piece, he composed the material for his album Edenderry (2004), which received excellent reviews from Jazz Times , All About Jazz and Trombone Journal , among others .

Gilkes toured extensively through Europe, Asia, Latin and South America. Previous engagements include performances at Umbria Jazz , Vienna Jazz Festival, JVC Jazz Festival, Telluride Jazz Festival, Panama Jazz Festival, Lincoln Center , Tokyo Orchard Hall and the Moscow Conservatory. In March 2008 Gilkes got an invitation to play with Billy Cobham and the Adelaide Philharmonic at the Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts in Australia. He was a guest at the 2008 International Trombone Festival in Salt Lake City.
