Martin Wind

Martin Wind (* 1968 in Flensburg ) is a German jazz musician ( double bass , composition).

Act

Wind studied at the Cologne University of Music. In 1989 he was one of the first to graduate from the Federal Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer . A DAAD scholarship enabled him to complete a master's degree in jazz composition and performance at New York University between 1996 and 1998 . He worked u. a. together with Christoph Eschenbach , Gidon Kremer , Mstislaw Rostropowitsch , Hank Jones , Frank Wess , Johnny Mandel , Mark Murphy , Slide Hampton , Johnny Griffin , Cedar Walton , Michael Brecker , Don Friedman , John Scofield , Pat Metheny , Fred Hersch or Kenny Barron . He is a member of Dena DeRose's trio and is part of Matt Wilson's band Arts and Crafts .

Wind leads his own combos, with which he presents an album under his own name. At JazzBaltica he worked with Joakim Milder in 2009 . In 2010 he led the JazzBaltica Ensemble , which interpreted his compositions. In 2017 he toured with Philip Catherine .

Since 1997, Wind has been a lecturer in the jazz department of New York University.

Prizes and awards

In 1995, Wind took third place in the Thelonious Monk competition . In 2000 he was the first jazz musician to receive the sponsorship award, which is awarded as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Art Prize . In 2004 his hometown appointed him "Flensburg Ambassador".
