Marquis Hill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marquis Hill (* around 1989 in Chicago ) is an American jazz trumpeter (also flugelhorn ) and composer.

Hill switched from drums to trumpet (an early influence was a Lee Morgan album his headmistress gave him), studied music education and jazz at Northern Illinois University (jazz director Ronald Carter knew him from youth work on the South Shore of Chicago with a big band) with a bachelor's degree in 2009. While still a student, he made a name for himself on the Chicago jazz scene. In 2012 he received his Masters Degree (Jazz Education) from DePaul University . In addition to appearances with his Blacktet, among others, he also taught at the University of Illinois . In 2014 he moved to New York.

In 2012 he won first place in the International Trumpet Guild's Jazz Improvisation Competition, in 2013 the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition and in 2014 the Thelonious Monk competition for solo trumpet (part of the award was a recording contract with Concord Music). In 2016, he won Down Beat's Rising Star Poll .

He mixes post-bop mainly with spoken word , hip-hop and drum and bass and uses subtone (originally by saxophone players like Lester Young ) when playing the trumpet to create a warmer tone closer to the human voice.

In addition to his solo career, he played as a sideman of Marcus Miller and Joe Lovano and, in his early days in Chicago, with members of the AACM ( Fred Anderson , Ernest Dawkins ).
