Makaya Marcus McCraven (born October 19, 1983 in Paris ) is a French-American jazz musician ( drums , composition ) and, by his own account, a beat scientist .

Live and act

McCraven, son of the drummer Steve McCraven and the folk singer Agnes Zsigmondi ( Kolinda ), grew up first in France, then in the Pioneer Valley in Massachusetts. At the age of five he played together with students in his father's drum ensemble, the CMSS Bashers. In middle school, he and friends formed a band to accompany his mother's folk songs. In high school, McCraven co-founded the Cold Duck Complex , a jazz hip-hop band that developed a strong following in the Northeastern America and released three albums. He studied music at the University of Massachusetts Amherst but never graduated (despite being part of the University Jazz Orchestra and receiving various down-beat student awards).

In 2007 McCraven moved to Chicago, where he became part of the jazz scene and performed in the bands of Bobby Broom , Corey Wilkes , Willie Pickens , with the Occidental Brothers , Marquis Hill and Jeff Parker , but also worked as a studio musician for Apollo Sunshine and Kris Delmhorst . In 2012 he released his debut album, Split Decision (Chicago Sessions), as the leader of a trio. In the years that followed, he performed weekly with other musicians to develop concepts for his next album, which was released in 2015 as In the Moment (IARC) and which helped his breakthrough. He also performed with Kamasi Washington . In 2016 he toured mostly in Europe. After several mix tapes, his double album Universal Beings was released in 2018 , on which he can be heard with musicians from the scenes from New York, London and San Francisco. In 2019 it was nominated for the JJA Awards . At the Down Beat Critics Poll 2020 he was the winner in the categories of best producer (Rising Star) and best drummer of the year (Rising Star) .
